LIFE SCIENCE VILLAGE, WALES

Buckingham Pools are proud to announce the successful completion of the new swimming complex at Canolfan Pentre Awel in Llanelli, delivered in partnership with Bouygues UK. This state-of-the-art centre brings together life science, business innovation, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities at the 83-acre Delta Lakes site — a flagship regeneration project led by Carmarthenshire County Council, designed to promote healthier, more active communities.

Appointed as the specialist contractor, Buckingham Pools was responsible for the full design and build of three swimming facilities: a 25m × 17m eight-lane main pool for public and competition use, a 17m × 10m learner pool for teaching and family sessions, and a 10m × 8m hydrotherapy pool to support rehabilitation and clinical programmes delivered by the NHS. Our scope included the structural pool shells, advanced filtration and water treatment systems, and integrated environmental controls — all designed and constructed to the highest commercial specification.

From concept through completion, Buckingham Pools worked closely with Bouygues UK to engineer a facility that exemplifies precision, sustainability, and user inclusivity. Features such as Poolpod assisted-access lifts, energy-efficient filtration systems, and competition-grade timing technology ensure the pools are accessible, efficient, and future-ready. The project also contributed significantly to Bouygues UK’s social value commitments, generating over £35 million in community benefits, creating new local employment and apprenticeship opportunities, and engaging with local schools and universities throughout construction.

Peter Sharpe, Project Director at Bouygues UK, said, “We were delighted to work alongside Buckingham Pools, who led the delivery of the swimming complex at Canolfan Pentre Awel with exceptional expertise and professionalism. Their leadership of the pool works, from concept to completion, was central to achieving a facility of outstanding quality for Carmarthenshire County Council. As the main contractor, Bouygues UK greatly valued the collaborative approach and specialist knowledge that Buckingham Pools brought to the team. The result is a first-class community resource that will serve Llanelli for generations.”

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans added, “I would like to extend my thanks on behalf of the County Council to Buckingham Pools for their involvement in the project. The pool element of the development was extremely important to the overall success of Canolfan Pentre Awel and I am pleased to say that the pool is being enjoyed by the community as originally intended.”

The completed swimming facility stands as a centrepiece of Canolfan Pentre Awel, supporting the health and wellbeing of the Llanelli community for generations to come. Buckingham Pools is honoured to have played a pivotal role in delivering such a high-quality, sustainable, and inclusive facility that embodies our commitment to excellence and our passion for creating spaces that truly make a difference.
